Blue topaz is one of the recognized birthstone for the month of December adopted by the American Gem Trade Association in 1912. In crystal lore, the gem is believed to provide cooling properties to the extreme that when thrown in a boiling water, it would cool down the liquid. It is said to help in calming down a short-tempered person or anyone who’s in a state of anger or frustration.
As a silicate mineral, blue topaz is most durable with a rating of 8 in the Mohs scale. Generally, blue topaz is created through irradiation and begins as pale or colorless crystal and to stabilize the change in color, heat treatment is rendered.
After the necessary procedures, blue topaz may result in three different shades known as "Sky," "Swiss," and "London" blues. The Sky has a lighter blue tone. The rich, deep variety is the London blue which is at times considered a cost-effective alternative for sapphire.
With the myths and various healing properties attached to it, blue topaz is a popular jewelry option and can be set in rings, earrings and necklaces. Its calming hue and well-polished surface makes it a perfect gift for your mom, siblings, and dearest friends.
The majority of blue topaz is mined in Brazil with some production in Australia, China, Myanmar and Mexico.
