Turquoise, December's birthstone, is a gorgeous stone found in a range of majestic sky blues to calming blue green and yellow green combinations. Discovered in about 3000 BCE, Turquoise has a long history.
The word “turquoise” originated in the 16th century from the French word for “Turkish,” because the striking stone was first brought to West European attention from Turkey, mined in the Khorasan Province of Iran. Turquoise had been treasured in Iran (then known as Persia) for over two thousand years. The gem decorated palaces; that magnificent sky blue that shone from the turquoise reminded anyone seeing the palace of the heavens.
Iran continues to be a larger supplier of turquoise. However, other deposits have been found and are being mined in other countries, some of the largest right here in the United States. Turquoise is being used to make breathtaking jewelry, including turquoise pendants, turquoise rings, and turquoise necklaces. Although turquoise is December's birthstone, its jewelry is appropriate for any gift on any occasion.
