Rose Gold -- On Trend for Gold Jewelry
by Chavez Fine Jewelers Inc.
Rose gold, a long-time favorite of those seeking jewelry with a unique look, is a trending choice as more people notice its distinctive rich color and beauty.

Who Has Worn Rose Gold Jewelry in the Past?

Rose Gold -- On Trend for Gold Jewelry Russian jewelers of the early 19th century appear to have been the first to use rose gold in their designs. In fact, they used it so extensively that rose gold was first known as Russian gold. In 1924, Louis Cartier drew world-wide attention to rose gold with the creation of the Trinity de Cartier rings. The rings featured intertwined bands of yellow, white, and pink gold symbolizing, respectively, fidelity, friendship, and love. France's multi-talented Jean Cocteau immediately made one of the rings his signature piece. By the end of the 20th century, rose gold disappeared from collections, but designers seeking new ideas returned to rose gold with the start of the 21st century. Rose gold designs have increased in popularity over the past decade, and all major designers now offer rose gold pieces.

What is Rose Gold?

Rose Gold -- On Trend for Gold Jewelry Rose gold actually comes in three shades -- pink, rose, and red gold. These three shades are created by varying the amount of the silver and copper alloys that are added to the yellow gold. Because pure 24 karat gold is such a soft metal, silver, copper, zinc, nickel, or palladium are commonly added to it as alloys to make it strong enough for use in jewelry and other items. The subtle pink gold tint is a blend of 75 percent gold, 20 percent copper, and five percent silver. True rose gold consists of 75 percent gold, 22.5 percent copper, and 2.5 percent silver. Red gold consists of 75 percent gold and 25 percent copper.

How is Rose Gold Valued?

Rose Gold -- On Trend for Gold Jewelry Rose gold jewelry contains the same amount of pure gold as a piece of yellow gold jewelry of an equal karat weight. However, the value of a piece of yellow, white, or rose gold jewelry does not depend solely on the karat weight of the gold it contains. The value of a piece also depends on the desirability of the color of the metal. As the popularity of rose gold goes up and demand increases, the value of a piece of rose gold jewelry is becoming comparable to a similar piece done in white or yellow gold. One trait, in addition to the attractive richness of even the lightly tinted pink gold, adds to the desirability of rose gold. As the jewelry ages, the copper alloy darkens, adding to the richness of the color and creating a vintage look that is appreciated and sought after by many.

Always in style, rose gold always demonstrates unique, personal style.
