Oh So Feminine, the Pearl is June's Birthstone
by Chavez Fine Jewelers Inc.
Oh So Feminine, the Pearl is Junes Birthstone The modern birthstone for the month of June is pearl. While most gemstones are mined within the Earth, pearls are formed inside a living creature--the mollusk. Certain species of freshwater or salt water mollusks such as oysters, mussels and clams produce the organic gem. When a foreign substance lodges inside the mollusk's shell, it irritates the soft internal tissues. As a defense mechanism, the mollusk secretes a pearl sac to coat the irritant. Over years, layer upon layer of nacre creates the world's most feminine g...

As Green as Spring, May's Birthstone is the Lush Emerald
by Chavez Fine Jewelers Inc.
As Green as Spring, Mays Birthstone is the Lush Emerald Emerald, the May birthstone, is the transparent to opaque green variety of the mineral beryl. The term Emerald is in reference to its color, from the Greek word smaragdus which translates as "green stone". Small quantities of chromium and vanadium in the crystal structure of emerald caused its nature like color.

It appears to have quite an extensive array of hues ranging from yellow green to blue green. Any beryl crystals can only be referred as emeralds when they are medium...

One of the Birthstones for March is the Bloodstone
by Chavez Fine Jewelers Inc.
Bloodstone, March's birthstone, appears in various shades of green, spotted with maroon. These spots, created by iron oxide and jasper, resemble blood. Because of this, the stone was given its name. The largest bloodstone producer is India, but it is also mined here in the United States.

Over the centuries, the bloodstone has had many uses. Almost three thousand years ago, bloodstone was believed to stop bleeding when applied to a wound. Because of this people carried bloodstone pendants with them, especially those that might be in risk of physical danger regularly, such as soldiers. And in the Middle Ages bloodstone rings were thought to help with anything magical, including divination and initiating spells.

Today, the bloodstone is thought to help increase confidence and decrease anxiety. As March's birt...

Garnet; January's Fiery Birthstone
by Chavez Fine Jewelers Inc.
The warm oranges and rich reds of garnet, January's birthstone, remind one of a family fireplace, and therefore are the perfect balance to this cold winter month. Garnet jewelry has been associated with the power to heal and the strength of human relationships.

October's Birth Stone: Lovely Tourmaline
by Chavez Fine Jewelers Inc.
Versatile Tourmaline

One of the prettiest semi-precious gems, Tourmaline, serves as the birth stone for the month of October. It often signifies a favorite gift for an eighth wedding anniversary. This rare mineral astonishes people because of its variety and beauty.

Tourmaline consists of a complex assortment of different minerals within a boron silicate crystalline structure. Different natural compounds add color to this stone, producing many interesting shades. Iron gives a brilliant blue hue to some Indicolite Tourmalines. Verdelite Tourmaline, also called "Brazilian Emerald" displays vivid green colors. Iron contributes a distinctive black or grey appearance to Schorl Tourmaline. This gem even displays reddish and pink shades called Elbaite and Rubellite. Yellow, brown and colorless versions also occur in ...
